The Invicta Group has become owned by its employees and gets a new Managing Director

We are pleased to announce that the Invicta Group has joined the ranks of a growing number of companies across the UK that are owned by their employees.

One of the main advantages of employee ownership is that it puts the emphasis on the people at the heart of an organisation; involving them in key-decision making and thereby realising their collective potential and input. Research also shows that co-owned companies tend to be more successful and innovative, with the incentive to deliver superior business performance.

Invicta has also taken this opportunity to restructure its management team, which has resulted in Martin Brown (formerly Operations Manager) taking over as Managing Director from John Waddington who becomes the Group Chairman.

“This is undoubtedly a landmark moment in the company’s 108-year history,” said John Waddington. “The staff at Invicta are all highly skilled and dedicated to providing the best products and services for our customers. Giving them a stake in the company not only recognises this hard work and commitment but also promotes the company’s future development and sustainability.”

Martin Brown (pictured) joined Invicta as Operations Manager in 2016 with over 30 years’ experience of the food production industry. Since then, he has been responsible for increased production and efficiency. This has included the introduction of new state-of-the-art machinery to keep Invicta at the forefront of changing technology.

He has also overseen the development of many new and innovative products to make sure that Invicta’s comprehensive metalware and plastics ranges continue to meet customers’ needs, as well as increasing the company’s capacity to undertake bespoke projects.

“I am delighted to take over the role of Managing Director of this well-established and successful company,” said Martin Brown. “John has fulfilled this position admirably for many years and it is testimony to his considerable talent and dedication that Invicta is at the forefront of the market today. With his support as the Group’s Chairman, I will strive to maintain our industry-wide reputation for manufacturing top-quality products at competitive prices, backed by fast, friendly and efficient service.”

This is a new and exciting step for Invicta that will benefit customers, suppliers and employees alike. We look forward to giving continued service.

Invicta is best known for supplying products to the bakery, catering and food processing industries but we also have customers from other walks of life such as Chilli Penguin Stoves - a small, family-run business in North Wales.

The company manufactures a fantastic range of multi-fuel stoves that can be found in homes, offices, pubs, canal boats, shepherd’s huts and even a cave dwelling across the UK. They are renowned for their beautiful, functional designs and excellent performance capabilities.

We were delighted when Chilli Penguin commissioned us to make some bespoke trays for their mini stoves that not only fitted to their exact specifications but also matched their own high manufacturing standards.

So where does the company name come from? Evidently, when the company started out some 20 years ago, the founders needed a name for their first stove. One of their young son’s favourite books was about a penguin who didn’t like the cold and from that chilly penguin, Chilli Penguin was born.

What a great idea!

New from Invicta: a stock range of durable, versatile bloomer tins — engineered to perform in busy bakeries.

Invicta is delighted to announce the launch of a brand-new range of standard bloomer tins, now available directly from stock.

Previously produced only as bespoke items, the tins have become so popular with bakers that they are now part of Invicta’s permanent product range — making them readily accessible and easy to order.

The innovative design offers exceptional versatility. The deep base tin can be used on its own or paired with a couple of lid options: a shallow top tray for a shaped finish, or a flat lid to create a distinctive D-shaped loaf. The shallow top tray can also be used independently as a main base tray. For bakeries seeking maximum flexibility, the full set provides the widest choice of options for different bakes.

Manufactured in heavy-duty aluminised steel, the new bloomer tins are built to withstand the demands of busy bakeries. They are stocked in self-finish, with a wide range of non-stick coatings available on request.

The standard range features three models: a 2-channel tin, a 3-channel tin, and a single tin. Each is supplied with the same flexible configuration of deep base, shallow top tray and flat lid options, giving bakeries the freedom to choose the combination that best suits their products and processes.

While this standard range will meet the needs of many bakeries, Invicta will also continue to take bespoke orders for those requiring customised solutions.

For further information or to discuss non-stick coating options, please contact the office on 01751 473 483 or email: sales@invictabakeware.co.uk The ready-to-order products can also be viewed online.

Sustainability starts with quality. Invicta’s products are designed and built to last, setting us apart in a market often dominated by low-quality alternatives. By using superior materials and expert craftsmanship, we create products with a longer lifespan— meaning fewer resources are wasted over time.

Embracing recycled materials

We’re committed to using recycled metal wherever possible in the manufacturing of our products. This not only reduces the demand for new raw materials but also minimizes the environmental impact of our production processes. It’s one more way we’re helping to create a circular economy in our industry.

Harnessing solar power

Our factory is equipped with solar panels, enabling us to harness renewable energy for our operations. By reducing reliance on non-renewable energy sources, we’re making strides to lower our carbon footprint and ensure our manufacturing process is as environmentally friendly as possible.

Supporting local and sustainable practices

As a UK-based and employee-owned company, Invicta takes pride in supporting local skilled jobs and minimizing the environmental costs associated with overseas shipping. Our team is united by a shared vision of delivering high-quality, sustainable products while making a meaningful contribution to our community and the planet.

At Invicta Bakeware, we believe that quality and sustainability go hand in hand. By creating products that stand the test of time and adopting eco-conscious practices, we’re helping to build a greener future for the baking and food production industry.

Our Sales Office Manager, Vanessa Boyes, has clocked up 35 years at Invicta.

This month our Sales Office Manager, Vanessa Boyes, is celebrating a very special milestone – 35 years of working at Invicta!

The likelihood is that when you call the office, Vanessa will pick up the phone, as she is one of a small team offering friendly customer advice and processing orders.

When Vanessa first joined the company in 1989, Invicta was a much smaller operation and based at Stanfield Hall Farm under the ownership of the Jones family. She shares some of her memories of that time and how things have changed at Invicta:

“I remember fondly going over to the farmhouse once a week to sit at the large dining room table and count out the cash wages, enveloping the money for each staff member. This was one of my favourite parts of the job, as Mrs Jones would prepare a tray of coffee and biscuits to enjoy whilst we were there!

“The main production line in the factory at that time was cake and bread tins and one of my main duties was a daily call to all of our retail customers for their monthly orders, which were then written into a general order book for the factory.

“In 1991, we moved to our current premises on a small industrial estate in Pickering, North Yorkshire, which had a new purpose-built shop floor, new machinery and plenty of space and organisational work cells for all production staff – and best of all an up-to-date phone system!

“Over the years, the factory has been extended and continually improved with an influx of state-of-the-art machinery. It now produces a vast range of bakeware items, including baking trays and racks together with many bespoke and special fabrications. Tins are still made at the factory but now constitute a small part of our sales.

“I really enjoy my work at Invicta and many of my colleagues have been with the company for the same amount of time or longer in some cases! Invicta is now employee-owned which means we all feel really invested in the business.

“My office colleagues are also great friends, we all support each other in our roles and recently myself, Jennie and Lucy have joined a line dancing class together!

“Invicta has supported me whilst I raised my young family by allowing me to drop my working days whilst the children were little and then returning full time and being promoted to Sales Office Manager in 2011. The company feels like my family now!”

Vanessa (left) is pictured here with Office Administrator, Lucy Schofield, with a cake baked by Lucy to mark Vanessa’s 35 years of service.

If you thought that Invicta only supplies products to the bakery and food manufacturing industries then think again!

We've been working on a large bespoke order for Bioline AgroSciences Ltd - a global company that produces a range of invertebrate organisms which are used for the control of pests in a variety of agricultural crops. Using insects to control other insects not only increases the yield of crops such as cut flowers, vegetables and soft fruit, but also reduces the need for pesticides.

The company's site in Little Clacton, Essex, needed some racks and punched-out trays for housing insects in their breeding rooms. Due to the high humidity required for hatching, the equipment is being specially manufactured from top quality stainless steel. As well as being lightweight and easy to move around, the resulting product is also easy to clean – essential for the company to meet its own high production standards.

Our fabulous staff team is not only involved with the manufacture and distribution of bakeware but many of them are also seriously good bakers in their own right.

Lucy Scholefield, Invicta’s Sales Office Administrator, put her baking skills to good use recently when she took part in the nationwide MacMillan Coffee Morning. This involved making cakes on request in exchange for a donation. What an amazing excuse to indulge! The rest of the staff enjoyed such delights as lemon drizzle, cherry & coconut, date & walnut, chocolate, coffee and fruit cakes, as well as gingerbread and banana loaves. They were all delicious but the very best thing was that it was all in a good cause.

Lucy raised a total of £159.50 for MacMillian Cancer Support, which offers emotional, physical and financial help to people living with cancer and their families. Now dubbed the “world’s biggest coffee morning’ the initiative started from a small event in 1990 and since then has raised £290million for the charity.

“A big thank you to everyone for their donations,” said Lucy. “I have had many experiences with MacMillan – the nurses helped my adopted grandma many years ago with her last few weeks on this planet and ensured she was comfortable and had a gin & tonic with her!

“The work they do behind the scenes is incredible. They not only provide palliative care, but also are on hand to help with other matters or just be there for a chat – a truly remarkable charity.”

We look forward to the same again next year. Get your orders ready!

Customers report high satisfaction levels for both products and services.

Thank you to everyone who took part in our recent 2020 customer survey. It goes without saying that the past year has been challenging for everyone, with much-reduced opportunities for the usual face-to-face contact with our customers. It was therefore particularly valuable for us to get people’s feedback in this way and hear what you had to say. We analyse the results carefully and pay particular attention to all of the written comments so that we can try and improve our products and services.

We were thrilled that a record-breaking 97% rated our workmanship as ‘excellent’ or ‘good’. We pride ourselves on the top-quality of our products so this was particularly gratifying.

Furthermore, over 90% of respondents:

rated the ordering process for our products as ‘excellent’ or ‘good’.

scored the speed of responses to enquiries as ‘excellent’ or ‘good’

thought that our competitivity was ‘excellent’ or ‘good’

considered that the performance of our products reflected good value for the price paid

In addition, 92% of customers were very satisfied or satisfied with the company overall and 90% said they were extremely likely or very likely to purchase further products.

It was also heartening to receive so many kind comments. Some of them are shared below:

“Great service, friendly staff and great lasting products. We wouldn’t use anyone else.”

“I have very much appreciated the warmth and interest in every communication that I have had. The human touch is excellent.”

“Very good quality items, customer service response rate is excellent, staff were very happy to help with queries and questions.”

“Top quality, sensible price.”

It was good news that six out of eight topic areas received a higher satisfaction rating than the previous year’s survey, but we do not want to rest on our laurels. There were a couple of helpful comments regarding the online ordering process and we are now reviewing this system to see what improvements can be made.

We’re pleased to announce a new case study on our website, featuring Middle Ground Trading and its long-standing partnership with Invicta.

For over 25 years, Middle Ground Trading has acted as a vital link between clients and manufacturers across the global baking industry. Founded by Margaret Barker, the business supports projects throughout the UK, Europe, Australia and the Middle East - managing requirements from initial concept through to final delivery.

The case study explores how Invicta has been part of this trusted network for decades, with a relationship that began at the very start of Margaret’s career. Today, that connection continues to underpin a collaborative partnership built on reliability, technical expertise and a shared commitment to delivering the right solution.

Working closely from the early stages of a project, Invicta provides practical insight on materials, design and performance - supporting Middle Ground Trading in meeting specific customer requirements across a wide range of applications.

One recent project involved the design and manufacture of around 40 bespoke stainless steel tables for a customer in the Middle East. Produced in a flat-pack format with clear assembly instructions, the solution was developed to support efficient export and straightforward installation on site.

The case study highlights how strong supplier relationships, combined with technical knowledge and adaptability, can deliver effective solutions across international markets.

Discover Invirobake™ − Invicta’s new PFAS-free coating, now available to trial.

Invicta has announced the launch of Invirobake™, one of the first PFAS-free industrial bakeware coatings available within the UK.

As awareness and scrutiny around PFAS (‘Forever Chemicals’) continues to grow, food manufacturers are increasingly reviewing the materials used across production environments and preparing for changing regulatory and environmental requirements.

Developed by Invicta, Invirobake™ is a PFAS and PFOA-free coating designed specifically for bakery and food manufacturing applications. Based on advanced Sol-Gel technology, it provides a practical, future-focused alternative for use in food-contact environments that is also comparatively priced.

Initial testing has shown encouraging results, and Invicta is working closely with customers to assess performance, durability and suitability under real production conditions.

The launch represents an important step in the company’s continuous development of coating solutions, supporting customers as they begin to explore alternatives to traditional fluoropolymer systems.

Invirobake™ has been designed with the demands of modern food production in mind, including high temperature capability, non-stick performance and compliance with recognised EU and US food-contact standards.

As with all coating systems, suitability will depend on individual processes, and Invicta is encouraging customers to trial Invirobake™ within their own production environments.

Reids of Caithness were the lucky winners of £350 worth of Invicta products when their name came out of the hat for the most recent customer survey prize draw.

Known across the world for their delicious biscuits and baked goods, the family-run Scottish bakery has been around for over half a century. It has many accolades to its name, including 2017 Scottish Baker of the Year and 2023 Wholesale Baker of the Year at the Scottish Baker of the Year Awards.

Managing Director Gary Reid, who runs the business with his wife Tracy, has been one of Invicta’s customers for almost 30 years and has kitted out the Thurso-based bakery with various racks, dollies, and trays, together with countless other Invicta products.

“All of the products we have bought from Invicta have been of exceptional quality, which is important to a company like ours that is so passionate about the food we produce,” said Gary Reid. “We carefully source the finest ingredients to make our products special, so it stands to reason that we also want to use high-performing bakeware to get the best possible end results.

“In a family business like ours, impeccable customer service is something that we have always prided ourselves on, so we particularly value this attribute in our suppliers. The sales team at Invicta are so helpful and friendly that it is always a pleasure to do business with them,” he added.

The most recent Invicta customer survey showed that over 97% of customers were either ‘very satisfied’ or ‘satisfied’ with the company and 94% said they were ‘extremely likely’ or ‘very likely’ to purchase further products.

Did you know that Invicta does far more than supply equipment? The company offers a complete solution for your operations, whether you are a single-handed, start-up baker or a large big-name brand wanting a total re-fit.

One of our longstanding customers is the renowned Hambleton Bakery, founded by Julian Carter and Tim Hart in 2008. They now have a growing list of wholesale customers with shops in Oakham, Market Harborough, West Bridgford, Stamford and Oundle.

Their latest venture is a new bakery at Hooby Lane, Stretton, Oakham that has been designed for the production of long-fermented breads such as sourdoughs. This requires specific equipment as it is hand-shaped and the doughs are stored in bulk.

"We have used Invicta since 2008 and have had bespoke equipment made for us such as tables, racks, bread tins and trays," said Julian Carter."As the business has grown, we have continued to produce new products and this has required new equipment. We have had a great relationship with Invicta over the years and they understand what we require. Invicta has the personal touch of a family business and the skills to produce well-made and well-lasting products in the quantities we require, without having to wait over long periods of time", he concluded.

Please call us on 01751 473483 for an initial discussion and free, no obligation quotations.

Check out our new range of pressed-corner aluminium trays

We’re excited to share the launch of our new range of pressed-corner aluminium trays, designed with our customers firmly in mind. Manufactured from 2mm aluminium, these trays combine strength, durability and easy-clean performance – all produced to the highest standards here at our North Yorkshire factory.

Pressed corners are a major advantage in commercial food production. Unlike traditional folded trays, the pressed design eliminates angled internal corners where food particles can collect, making them far easier and quicker to clean. For busy bakeries and food manufacturers, that means better hygiene, faster turnaround times, and reduced risk of contamination – all key factors in maintaining consistent quality.

These trays aren’t just easy to clean – they’re built to last. The 2mm aluminium construction provides excellent rigidity and resistance to bending or warping, even in the most demanding production environments. Whether you’re baking, chilling, or handling goods, you can rely on these trays to perform day in, day out.

We’re offering them in a variety of useful formats, including 762 x 457mm, 600 x 400mm, and standard Gastronorm sizes – but we know one size doesn’t fit all. That’s why we can also produce trays to virtually any size or configuration, up to a maximum depth of 25mm, giving you exactly what works best for your process.

This latest development is part of our ongoing commitment to delivering products that solve real-world challenges for our customers. Whether it’s easier cleaning, longer-lasting equipment, or a better fit for your operation, we’re proud to offer solutions that support your business – all with the trusted build quality and attention to detail you expect from Invicta.

If you’d like to know more about our new pressed-corner trays, or talk to us about a bespoke size or application, just get in touch at sales@invictabakeware.co.uk or telephone 01751 473483 – we’d be happy to help.

The Invicta Group – one of the UK’s leading and largest suppliers and manufacturers of equipment for the bakery, catering and food processing industries – currently has vacancies at its manufacturing base in Pickering, North Yorkshire.

This is an ideal opportunity to join this well-established and innovative company and be part of a skilled and friendly team that is committed to providing the best products and services for our customers.

Last year, Invicta joined the ranks of a growing number of companies across the UK that are owned by their employees. One of the main advantages of employee ownership is that it puts the emphasis on the people at the heart of an organisation; involving them in key-decision making and thereby realising their collective potential and input.

If you would like to be part of this exciting future then please get in touch.

Sheet metal fabricator welders

Experience in MIG and/or TIG welding of the above materials and thicknesses is also desirable.

The main duties of this role are to support production colleagues to ensure a minimum amount of down-time, keeping the factory floor, yard and - when required - offices and associated rooms, clean, tidy and free of obstructions. This will include cleaning down machinery and assisting engineers with maintenance. It will also involve removing laser cut parts from sheets ready for production operatives, as well as loading and unloading lasers with material. From time to time, some driving may be required, in order to collect from suppliers and deliver to customers.

Additional duties may also include: assisting stores with picking and packaging items for dispatch, including printing labels and arranging couriers; accepting deliveries from suppliers and putting goods away in appropriate places; picking, wrapping, and loading of goods onto Invicta vehicles.

For further details

If you are interested in either of these areas then please contact Steve Bielby, Invicta’s Production Manager, on 01751 473483 or email: steve@invictabakeware.co.uk

Two members of our office staff have once again been busy raising money for good causes.

Last month, Lucy Scholefield, our Sales Office Administrator, used her considerable baking talents to help fundraise for the Kirk Theatre here in our hometown of Pickering.

The Friends of the Theatre organised a coffee morning on Saturday 23 March which raised a massive £800. Lucy provided them with a whole range of wonderful cakes (pictured) and is all set to bake for the next four cake stalls that are scheduled for the remainder of the year. The Theatre, which is run entirely by volunteers and completely self-funded, is currently fundraising to convert the former chapel balcony mezzanine into a new performance and exhibition space.

Here is a photo of some of Lucy’s baking for the event. It all looks absolutely delicious. Fantastic job!!!

March was also a busy month for our Sales Office Manager, Vanessa Boyes, who undertook a skipping challenge for Cancer Research UK.

Vanessa raised a whopping £290 to support the charity by completing 100 skips every day for the entire month. We’re really proud of her, as she didn’t miss a single day!

Our staff regularly get involved with community events and supporting charitable causes. We look forward to reporting on their next ventures!

Business Development Manager, Lee Croucher, is quoted in editorial feature.

Invicta prides itself on the knowledge and expertise of its staff and we are always happy to offer advice to our customers, particularly when it comes to choosing and maintaining equipment.

The company has also been around for more than a century as both a manufacturer and supplier of bakery equipment and subsequently has built up an industry ‘know-how’ that is second to none. It has a strong reputation in the trade for this expertise, and it is for this reason that Invicta was approached by the editor of British Baker magazine for help with its popular editorial series, ‘The Bakery Project.’

Aimed at new or expanding businesses, the series covers a range of relevant topics and, as a former baker himself, the Invicta Group’s Business Development Manager, Lee Croucher (pictured), was only too pleased to offer advice for part six of the series which tackled the subject of ‘Equipment’. In the editorial he talks about the wide range of products available and comments on their selection. Read the full article below by following the link.

As well as start-up, specialist and small bakeries, Invicta also counts amongst its customers larger businesses. No order is considered too small and advice is tailored carefully to the customer’s individual needs.

Invicta provides performance-driven baking sheets and trays for every industry

In every food production environment, there are a few essentials that simply have to perform — and Invicta’s aluminium baking sheets and pressed trays are among them. Trusted not only by craft and industrial bakeries but also by food manufacturers across the sector, these core products combine quality, durability and competitive pricing, making them a go-to choice throughout the industry and beyond.

Invicta’s standard range is one of the most comprehensive in the UK, with a wide selection of baking sheets and trays held in stock and ready to order. Popular sizes such as 762 × 457 mm, 600 × 400 mm, and gastronorm formats are available straight from the shelf, alongside a half-size 457 × 381 mm baking sheet. All products are manufactured in heavy-duty 2.0 mm aluminium for strength, rigidity and consistent heat performance, and can be supplied in 3-sided, 4-sided or lipped formats. A wide choice of non-stick coatings is also available on request.

The pressed aluminium trays in the range bring an added advantage: rounded pressed corners that eliminate the sharp folds of traditional trays. This design not only improves hygiene and makes cleaning quicker, but the robust pressed construction also enhances strength and longevity, making the trays ideal for the demands of high-volume commercial use.

While the ready-to-order range offers excellent choice and quick delivery, Invicta also has extensive bespoke manufacturing capabilities. Whether it’s a specific size, a unique format or specialist coatings, Invicta’s in-house team can deliver solutions tailored to the exact requirements of individual businesses.

Backed by fast turnaround times (even on high-volume orders) and consistently competitive pricing, these trays and sheets represent real value as well as proven performance.

Invicta has designed a bespoke space-saving racking system for a North Yorkshire bakery to house its kitchen appliances.

Situated in the picturesque village of Welburn in the heart of the North York Moors, Dogh Bakery, Deli and Café is picture-perfect. It occupies the old post office and through its multi-paned windows can be seen delicious displays of tempting baked goods.

Yet - charming though it is - this old building poses several challenges to its new owners, Georgia Dowkes-White and Ryan Cuthbert, who took over the business in 2022.

As part of their improvement programme, they wanted to kit out a service kitchen but the space was tiny and no wall was straight! It looked like nothing was going to fit, in particular three of the main appliances – the oven, grill and microwave.

“This is when we decided to call in Invicta”, said Georgia. “We had been recommended to use them by the bakery’s previous owners who also passed on to us their treasured Invicta tins and trays, still going strong after more than 15 years. We had ordered a number of additional items to add to our stock, including some made-to-measure products and so far were very impressed with their performance and quality.

“Martin Brown, the company MD, came out to look at the space and he recommended a solution that included a custom-built rack to house the appliances. He did all the measurements and took the appliances away with him so they could be perfectly integrated into the design. The rack was then made up in the factory and quickly delivered and installed.

“The result is excellent; it fits perfectly and is strong, robust and easy to clean. The really clever bit is its innovative ‘skeleton’ structure. The obvious thing would have been to have had solid shelves and panels but this wouldn’t have allowed sufficient airflow around the individual appliances. Using less metal also kept the cost of the project down and the appliances are held firmly in place using a solid peg system.

“We’ve since had another area of the bakery fitted out with bespoke racks and we are about to put in an order for further shelving. We wouldn’t consider going anywhere else!

“We are continually impressed by Invicta’s friendly and efficient service. In all of our interactions we have felt genuinely cared for and not part of a mass process that is all too common with other companies. The products also speak for themselves. The fact that we are still using many of the original products inherited from the previous owners is testimony to their top quality and they are surprisingly competitively priced given the professional advice they come with.”

Congratulations to Tom Braithwaite who has passed his final apprenticeship exams with distinctions and merits.

Hard work has certainly paid off for Invicta engineer Tom Braithwaite who has recently passed his final apprenticeship exams with a fine collection of distinctions and merits.

Tom was taken on at our North Yorkshire-based factory in 2017 and simultaneously started a Level 2 apprenticeship in welding and fabrication at the Derwent Training Association in Malton, which specialises in providing engineering training across the region. This involved spending a day a week in college whilst consolidating and expanding his learning back at the work place.

After successfully completing his Level 2 qualification in July 2021, Tom immediately started a Level 3 course in mechanical engineering to reflect his increasing responsibilities at Invicta. Now, with this higher qualification also under his belt, he is fully trained in machine programming and operation; producing 2D CAD drawings and using various design software packages; as well as tool maintenance.

“When I first started out at Invicta, I assisted with the deburring, bending and welding of trays. Thanks to the skills that I have acquired during the apprenticeship, I am now involved with many other methods of working with metal and operate a wide range of machines within the factory, such as the turret punch, milling and turning machine and laser cutter. The course has also given me a greater appreciation of the business aspect of the company’s operations,” said Tom.

Martin Brown, Invicta’s Managing Director, added: “We are all extremely proud of Tom’s achievements who has worked very diligently throughout his training. Investment in staff and the desire to improve the expertise of the workforce has always been one of our main priorities and underpins our long-standing reputation within the industry for providing both finely crafted and innovative products.”

We recently hosted a visit from Craft Bakers Association President, Neil Woods. It was lovely to meet him and great to chat about the industry with someone so knowledgeable and experienced. Neil has been at the heart of the bakery industry for over 50 years and has worked in a variety of settings from craft bakeries to plant and instore operations. He really knows the ‘ins and outs’ of the trade and has seen many trends come and go.

It is particularly reassuring to us that he is a strong advocate of high-quality, British-made products, backed by good, old-fashioned customer service and trading values. It’s what Invicta stands for and makes us stand out from the crowd.

“Invicta has served bakers for over a century. The firm has seen us through times of great change, including two world wars and most recently the Covid pandemic. It has proven its ability and also longevity, and has adapted to meet the changing needs of the industry whilst maintaining its strong commitment to excellent customer service and superior product quality,” said Neil.

“It is wonderful to see a British manufacturing firm at the top of its game and I would urge people to try out Invicta products for themselves. I was certainly very impressed with what I saw, which ranged from traditional baking tins to innovative new products. It’s the perfect blend of modern techniques combined with the skills and know-how of a great manufacturing heritage,” he added.

Neil was also keen to hear about our bespoke services, which make up an increasing amount of our orders. Today’s customers are looking for workable solutions that meet their exact requirements and we are able to provide far more than the standard product ranges. We also offer complete bakery re-fits and our advice – gleaned from over a century’s worth of trading – is always freely given.

A new case study shows how Invicta’s bespoke approach helped The Brown Bean preserve the consistency of its signature wheaten bread.

We’re pleased to share a new case study on the Invicta website, featuring The Brown Bean, a well-established bakery based in Lisburn, Northern Ireland.

Founded in 2003, the business now operates as a dedicated bakery, supplying cafés and retail outlets with a range of freshly baked products. Among its most popular lines is its traditional wheaten bread, known for its distinctive shape and consistency.

When the time came to replace their original bread tins after nearly 20 years, maintaining this consistency was essential. Invicta worked closely with the team to produce 120 bespoke tins, carefully replicating the exact size and specification to ensure the product remained unchanged and continued to perform within their existing oven setup.

The case study highlights how a tailored approach and attention to detail can help bakeries protect established products while supporting efficient day-to-day production.

Invicta Group Chairman, John Waddington, retires after 43 years

Invicta’s Group Chairman, John Waddington, has been saying goodbyes to staff and customers this month as he retires from the company following 43 years of dedicated service.

John first joined the business – then named ‘Invicta Sheet Metal Company Ltd.’ – in 1978, having previously been employed as a draughtsman/design technician in Leeds. The move to Invicta, which was then based on a farm just outside Pickering in rural North Yorkshire, was only intended as a temporary measure while he looked for something that was more ‘outdoors-orientated’. What actually followed was a career journey that led to him reaching the top of the company and playing a major role in steering it through decades of innovation and change.

John started out by helping the Jones family (who owned Invicta) in the office. This encompassed everything from payrolls to sales. He also learned the ‘ins-and-outs’ of the baking industry, so, when Mr Jones died in 1982 he was able to take on the role of managing the office with the support of Mrs Jones. He was awarded a directorship in 1984, and continued to work alongside Keith Stamper, Managing Director.

In the years that followed, the pair worked hard to dynamise and expand the business, which included the opening of their purpose-built factory on the outskirts of Pickering. The premises were to be extended a further three times and today Invicta is one of the UK’s leading suppliers and manufacturers to the bakeware, catering and food processing industries.

On Keith’s retirement in 2010, John became Managing Director and under his leadership, the company has continued to go from strength to strength, including the launch of the plastics division, Food Industry Supplies, which has enabled it to greatly expand its markets. He was also instrumental in Invicta’s move to employee ownership at the end of last year when Martin Brown took over as Managing Director and John became Group Chairman.

“John has been a steady hand at the helm of the company for many years and it is due to his considerable talent and dedication that Invicta leads the market today,” said Martin Brown. “He carries enormous respect within the industry as a whole, as well as from the team here at Invicta. Thanks to him, Invicta has a reputation for friendly and efficient service, sound business ethics and fair trading practice. We wish him a very well-deserved and happy retirement.”

Speaking about his retirement, John Waddington said: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time here at Invicta. Over the decades, I have had the honour of working with excellent and loyal staff and it is testimony to the friendly, family atmosphere that so many of us have worked here for so long. I have also really valued the daily interaction with customers and I thank them for their business and support.

A keen sailor, John is looking forward to spending more time exploring the Northumberland coast and enjoying the company of his extended family.

Invicta is proud to announce the successful renewal of its ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certifications, reinforcing the company’s ongoing commitment to quality, consistency and environmental responsibility.

The renewal demonstrates that Invicta continues to meet the internationally recognised standards for both Quality Management Systems (ISO 9001) and Environmental Management Systems (ISO 14001) – reflecting robust internal processes, a culture of continual improvement and a strong focus on sustainable manufacturing.

ISO 9001 certification confirms Invicta’s dedication to maintaining exceptional levels of product quality and customer satisfaction. From design and manufacture through to delivery, every stage of production follows strict quality control procedures to ensure reliability and performance across the company’s extensive range of bakeware and food-handling equipment.

ISO 14001 renewal highlights Invicta’s proactive approach to environmental management. The company continues to make measurable progress in improving resource efficiency, minimising waste and reducing its overall environmental impact. These actions form part of Invicta’s wider commitment to responsible manufacturing and supporting sustainability within the bakery and food production sectors.

“Renewing both ISO certifications is an important achievement for Invicta,” said Martin Brown, Managing Director. “It’s a reflection of the care and attention that our entire team puts into everything we do – from the quality of our products to the way we manage our environmental responsibilities.

Sales Office Administrator Lucy Scholefield takes part in baking fundraiser despite a badly broken wrist.

Invicta Sales Office Administrator Lucy Scholefield has a well-deserved reputation for her delicious baking and over the years has raised hundreds of pounds for good causes both locally and nationally.

The latest organisation to have benefited from her skills and generosity is the Kirk Theatre in Pickering, the North Yorkshire market town where Invicta has its factory base.

Despite breaking her wrist in two places earlier this summer and having to undergo extensive restorative surgery, Lucy rallied to the cause and baked no less than a fruit cake, four gingerbread loaves, a chocolate cake and a coffee and walnut cake for the Theatre's fundraising cake sale earlier this month. They raised a whopping £600! This was a fantastic effort all round but especially by Lucy for really pulling out the stops.

Lucy also puts her baking skills into practice by regularly preparing the teas for Pickering Cricket Club. It is widely acknowledged that this greatly helps with match performance! Lucy has been doing this for the last 10 years – a role she took over from fellow Invicta employee Vanessa Boyes.

Invicta is an employee-owned company and many of its staff have worked there for years and are an integral part of the local community. There is also a strong team ethos and, as well as knowing the industry inside out, they all really care about what they do which extends into all parts of the business.

We are so proud to supply products to these worthy winners of the 2023 Baking Industry Awards

We are delighted that no less than five of our valued customers were amongst the winners of the 2023 Baking Industry Awards.

Taking place earlier this month at the Royal Lancaster in London, the awards recognise excellence in the baking industry and followed months of rigorous judging involving interviews, product testing and site visits.

Taking the ‘Baker of the Year’ title for the second year running was Tim Goodwin (pictured), founder of The Street Bakeshop in Old Basing, Hampshire. ‘Craft Bakery Business of the Year’ went to another regular customer Fisher & Donaldson – the fifth-generation, family-run firm based in Fife.

Two Magpies Bakery, based in East Anglia, picked up the first-ever trophy for ‘Employer of the Year’ for investment in its staff and in-house training provision; and the Just Love Food Company celebrated the best ‘Free-from Bakery Product of the Year’ with their delicious-looking Happy Birthday Cake.

Finally, ‘New Bakery Product of the Year’ was awarded to Bournemouth-based M’s Bakery for an innovative Chocolate and Raspberry Cube Croissant. Filled with chocolate crème patisseries and raspberry compote, it’s not surprising that this creation wowed the judges!

Congratulations to all the winners. We are proud to supply equipment to such a talented group of bakers who are rightly being recognised for their skills, enthusiasm and passion.

Invicta supplies top-quality products to hundreds of customers across the bakery, catering and food processing industries, ranging from individual craft bakers to large food manufacturing groups.

Bakeri Baltzersen were the lucky winners of the customer survey prize draw.

When the innovative North Yorkshire-based Bakeri Baltzersen learned that they had won £350 of Invicta products in our most recent customer survey prize draw, they decided to try out some new bread tins that would add to their already extensive list of products.

Baltzersen’s relationship with Invicta goes back four years when its owners Paul and Katie Rawlinson enlisted the company’s help to kit out their new bakery located at Kettlesing Head, a few miles from the picturesque spa town of Harrogate.

The bakery opened its doors in March 2020 just as the UK entered its first lockdown. Seizing the opportunity that this presented, the new business began baking for home deliveries. It went from strength to strength and since then has opened shops in Harrogate and Wetherby, as well as supplying over 100 wholesale partners across Yorkshire.

“Invicta helped us with equipment to get the bakery open, including trays, trolleys, plastics and more, and we've never had any issues with anything. The kit we had from the start is still in good condition and being used daily,” said Paul.

“The company are very knowledgeable and open to working with bakeries to develop new products, as well as supplying the standard options. They have subject matter experts on coatings and give a lot of guidance in the design phase. We'd wholeheartedly recommend Invicta and continue to use them on a regular basis,” he added.

Bakeri Baltzersen is renowned for its exciting range of long-fermented sourdough loaves, rye, ciabatta and more traditional yeasted white and granary style loaves/rolls. They also offer a full range of vienoisserie products such as croissant, pain au chocolat and the hybrid cruffin - a cross between a croissant and a muffin.

When presented with the prize money, the bakery decided to order multiple sets of 3-strap bread tins because this was a product area that they hadn’t yet developed.

“We think it will be a very useful extension of our range,” said Jacob Vezey, Head Baker at Bakeri Baltzersen (pictured). “Our wholesale partners are looking for options that allow them to minimise waste – for instance, the small ends of bloomer shaped products – and retail customers still love a traditional loaf shape. We are really looking forward to adding these tins to our stock of equipment. Invicta tins are always very reliable and good to use and I am sure that these will be no exception.”

The most recent Invicta customer survey showed that 94% said they would be ‘extremely likely’ or ‘very likely’ to buy Invicta products again.

The Bondgate Bakery has been one of our customers since it opened 40 years ago.

Invicta has many longstanding customers but one of its oldest is the Bondgate Bakery based in Otley.

This year, the renowned Yorkshire bakery is celebrating 40 years in business and it has been using Invicta products since it baked its first loaf of bread back in 1984.

The bakery was set up by Steve and Sally Taylor with the conviction of baking bread ‘the way it used to be’ and they utilised many recipes from Steve’s grandmother that are still lovingly made in the bakery today. Indeed the bakery remains totally committed to producing traditional bread using locally sourced, untreated flours.

“Over the years, most of our products have come from Invicta,” said Sally (pictured). “This has included bread tins, sheets, cake tins, racks, cooling wires, flan rings, and stainless steel tables – the list is endless. In fact, we are still using some of the products we bought 40 years ago. What better recommendation is there than that!!

“The friendly and helpful service we get from Invicta is exceptional and their products are always the best quality at a fair price. No job is too small or too large, which is important for an independent business such as ours.

“We have also commissioned a number of bespoke products, such as the flan rings used to produce our flagship quiches. These are unique in size and depth and it is important that we are able to source our specific size needs.”

Here at Invicta, we are delighted to have been part of the Bondgate Bakery’s success and it has been wonderful to see it establish itself as one of the UK’s leading bakers; winning countless awards along the way such as Best Small Baker in the BBC Food and Farming Awards, Best Baker in the Farm Shop and Deli Awards and finalist in the Yorkshire Post Taste Awards.

Heartfelt congratulations to Steve, Sally and the team and we hope to enjoy our partnership for many more decades to come!

We will be taking a selection of our best-selling lines to the Foodex exhibition taking place at Birmingham NEC from 24 - 26 April.

Amongst them will be our new inter-nesting Z-frame bakery racks. These have already proved really popular with early orders and are an ideal solution if you are short of floor space.

Made from durable 304 grade stainless steel, these 'space-saver' bakery racks are specifically designed to nest inside each other to save on space when not in use. For example, ten racks occupy a space of only 2 metres x 1 metre.

Produced in 25mm box section with a square construction frame, they are fitted with 25 x 25mm turned-down, anti-chafe angle runners to accept our standard 762mm x 457mm or 600mm x 400mm baking trays. The long edges are dressed for safety and they come complete with 4 x 100mm diameter nylon swivel castors for easy handling around the bakery.

As with most of our products, the racks can be tailored to suit your specific needs.

During the show, we will be demonstrating products from our extensive collection of industrial bakeware, including the unique patented tray-locked cup trays, custom-built tables, oven and bakery racks, dollies, baking trays, bread pans and tins.

Many bakers are looking beyond off-the-shelf equipment to get the perfect solution for their specific requirements and in recent years we have seen a massive growth in bespoke orders.

One such commission came from Manna Bakery in Harrogate, North Yorkshire. They wanted baking areas that fully optimised the available space and provided everything that was needed readily to hand. To achieve this goal, Invicta produced some bespoke metalwork tables with solid wooden tops for bread moulding and fitted trays underneath that could be slotted in from either side.

Michael Newby of Manna Bakery, said: "We have invested in many Invicta products, which have all been of excellent quality and given good, reliable service. The tables have been a very welcome addition to our bakery and it was extremely useful to be able to design exactly what we needed. They are an ideal fit for the space."

Poll finds that quality is the top priority for customers

A member survey conducted by the CBA showed that nearly half of respondents ranked quality as their top priority when choosing bakeware.

In a recent member opinion poll conducted on our behalf by the Craft Bakers Association, it was found that quality is the most important consideration when choosing bakeware.

Nearly half (47%) of respondents ranked quality as their top priority with price and customer service in equal second and third place with 26.5% of the vote.

Whilst all three measures are of paramount importance to us at Invicta, we were extremely gratified to hear that quality still matters within the industry, especially in a world where the race to offer the best price is often at the detriment of the finished product.

Our goal has always been to design and manufacture high quality products and we believe that this pays off in the long-term because products last longer and perform better.

Customers often tell us that they have had their Invicta products for years – even decades in some instances. This is very satisfying to us. We don’t subscribe to the ‘make them badly and they will have to replace them sooner’ philosophy. Quite the contrary, it is a matter of pride that an Invicta product just keeps on going!

We also offer a comprehensive refurbishment and re-coating service so that customers can really maximise the life of a product before the time comes to replace it.

We were delighted to sponsor the Craft Baker's Association's inaugural Champion Baker Award, which was announced along with other prizewinners at the Association's Business Day on 14 June.

The award went to Harrods and picking up the trophy on behalf of the iconic London firm was Yann Colet who is pictured here with Invicta's Managing Director Martin Brown (left) and outgoing CBA President Neil Woods.

Congratulations to everyone who took part in this prestigious event. As you can imagine, from such a strong field, there were lots of fantastic entries and the standard was very high.

As part of the competition, CBA members were invited to enter baked goods for judging across eight categories which included a sour dough loaf, fruit loaf and vegan cake. In addition to prizes in each class, points were accumulated to find the overall Champion Baker.

We thoroughly enjoyed the Business Day and it was great to meet old and new faces at the event.

Invicta has just completed a large bespoke order for multinational foodservice solutions specialist, Welbilt.

Invicta has recently designed a custom-built rack and tray unit for Welbilt – a multinational company that specialises in providing fully integrated foodservice solutions. It supplies some of the world’s top chefs and premier chain operators and is well known for facilitating streamlined kitchen and retail environments.

The racks, which have been commissioned to hold hot confectionery and pastry products will also double up as mobile workstations. They are special in that they have stepped runners, which can accommodate two different tray sizes (600mm x 400mm and 762mm x 457mm). They also have the added benefit of being upturned on the long edges, with front and back stops to prevent the trays sliding out. The trays can be inserted from both sides for ease of loading.

All Invicta products can be marked for identification or instruction purposes and the top of the racks are engraved with ‘caution hot’ for operator safety.

“Our role is to provide customised system solutions that are tailored to our customers’ specific needs,” said Simon Wells, National Accounts Sales Manager at Welbilt. “Invicta has worked with us to design and manufacture a top-quality product that fits perfectly into such a system and we have been very impressed with their services – from establishing an initial design brief through to manufacture and delivery of the final product.”
